Over 250 Roman, Greek and exotic types, borders, mathematical and astronomical symbols, etc. Engraved frontispiece-portrait by Rosaspina after Appiani, text and specimens within double rule border, specimens printed on rectos only, 3 folding plates of musical notation. (Minor foxing to frontispiece portrait; very slight dampstaining to some top margins in Vol. II). Contemporary green straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt fillets and floral gold- and blind- roll-tooled borders, central arabesque lozenge and cornerpiece ornaments stamped in blind, spines decorated in gilt and blind and gilt lettered, turn-ins gilt and blind-tooled, gilt edges (spines darkened and with small chips, joints rubbed); slipcases.

Second edition. Published five years after Bodoni's death by his widow and Luigi Orsi, his foreman for twenty years, the work remains "probably the most elaborate specimen that the world has ever seen - an imposing tour de force" (Updike). Brooks 1216; Updike, Printing types, II:169-171. (2)
