DURAN, Simeon ben Zemah (Spain-Algiers; 1361-1444). Responsa. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER

[North Africa?, 16th century]

2o (295 x 200 mm). On various qualities of paper. 316 leaves, with original Hebrew and modern lead pencil foliations; the first 16 leaves apparently missing according to the Hebrew foliation. Brown ink. Sephardic semi-cursive scripts. (Staining, some tears and repairs only slightly affecting the text, major repair on last leaf not affecting text, occasional marginal notes and scribbles.) Nineteenth-century half morocco binding, two paper flyleaves at back and front.

CONTENTS:
Fols. 1r-302v: text; 303r-316v: index (fol. 314r blank).

The codex seems to be a joint effort of a group of copyists (pupils?), each with his own script and layout. There is some overlapping of text on fols. 163v and 164r, while at the same time a different type of paper is used. The Amsterdam 1738 edition of Sefer Tashbets, the editio princeps of this text (Vinograd, Thesaurus, p. 64, no. 1490), is almost identical with this manuscript. Other manuscripts of Duran's responsa are in MSS Madrid, Escorial G-VI-7; Moscow, Russian State Library, Guenzburg 401 and 1596; Sasson 917; New York, Columbia University X893.15 D93; and St. Petersburg, Institute of Oriental Studies, B 130.
