Major-General Thomas Stanford Baldock, [C.B.], was born in January 1854 at Fernlea, near Romsey, Hampshire and educated at Cheltenham and the R.M.A. Woolwich. Commissioned as a Lieutenant into the Royal Artillery in 1873, he gained advancement to Captain in 1882 and to Major in 1890, the latter after attending Staff College between 1887-88. Posted to Malta as a Brigade-Major for the period 1890-94, Baldock was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on the eve of the Boer War, in which he served with distinction as C.O. of the Royal Artillery Mounted Rifles and later as Commandant of Standerton. Awarded the C.B. and Mentioned in Despatches, he was given the Brevet of Colonel in 1903 and appointed to the Ordnance Committee. Next appointed Commandant of the School of Gunnery in 1907, he gained rapid promotion to Major-General three years later and commanded the 49th (West Riding) Division in the early stages of the Great War. Severely wounded near Ypres in July 1915, he was invalided home for early retirement, but held the appointment of Colonel Commandant R.A. between 1924-31. The General died at Tremer, St. Trudy, Cornwall on 28.8.1937.
