Lot Essay
This movement is one of Lange's first three quarter plate movements which later became typical for Glashtte movements. It was sold to Charles Schumann in New York on 28 October 1868.
Mr. Reinhard Reichel, Head of the Uhrenmuseum, confirms in his letter dated 13 February 1997 that for customs reasons, the American retailer Charles Schumann in New York used to order the movements only (mostly at a special price of 145 Marks). The cases were produced in the US following the Glashtte models.
The pendant of this watch is stamped Pat. May 15th 1866 which refers to the US Patent No. 54831 for watches wound through the crown. This patent is listed and illustrated in A. Lange & Söhne - Eine Uhrmacherdynastie aus Dresden by Reinhard Meis (p. 332 and 334).
