The bulk carrier George S. Embiricos was built for the Greek-owned Alba Steamship Company by the Mitsui Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. at Tamano (Japan) in 1970. Greek-registered at the port of Andros, she measured 19,162 tons gross (13,231 net & 32,785 deadweight) and was 599 feet in length with an 84 foot beam. Designed with six holds, each with a steel hatchway and specially strengthened for particularly heavy cargoes, she had a grain and bale capacity of 1,534,636 and 1,333,175 cubic metres respectively and carried two derricks both capable of lifting 9 tonnes. Powered by one of Mitsui Zosen's own single-acting 7-cylinder 11,500bhp. engines, she had a service speed of 17 knots and bunkers for 1,825 tonnes of high viscosity fuel oil.
