A KAWARI KABUTO [HELMET]
Mid-Edo Period (18th Century)
A simple zunari [head-shaped] helmet transformed with lacquer into a human head, the brow cusped over the eyes, the sides of the head lacquered in flesh tones, the embossed eyebrows, the top of the head and the sideboards lacquered black, humanoid ears attached to either side by leather ties, a hachimaki [head cloth] in soft metal surrounding the head and ending in a knot (probably copper) on the forehead, lacquered red and secured by leather ties around the ears, at the back of the head a turning pin and two hooks (probably for the attachment of a queue of hair), shikoro [neck-guard] formed by a solid plate of black-lacquered iron
