Mid-Edo Period (18th Century)
The simple iron bowl extended and modelled in leather to represent a type of eboshi [a soft cloth cap], the top folded down at the back, two scroll designs radiating down from the central ridge on either side, lacquered bright red, the front with a bold demonic shishi [lion] moulded in coloured lacquers, the Hineno-jikoro [close-fitting neck-guard] of kiritsuke-kozane [imitation lamellae] red-lacquered and with alternate rows of red and white kebiki-odoshi [close-spaced lacing]
