A KAWARI-KABUTO [HELMET]
Early Edo Period (17th Century)
The six-plate conical bowl extended with lacquered leather to form a nasubi-nari-kabuto [aubergine-shaped helmet], the apex capped with a stalk and the brow with bold wrinkles and eyebrows; five-plate black-lacquered iron itamono Hineno-jikoro [solid plate close-fitting neck-guard], the lower plate lacquered with translucent lacquer over gold, with mauve lacing in sugake [spaced lacing] style
