Mid-Edo Period (18th Century)
An extremely fine and large mask in russet iron, the cheeks smooth and devoid of wrinkles, the simple rounded mouth with the nose hinged and fitted with a short hair moustache, on each cheek is an applied branch of plum blossom with a rinpo [Buddhist wheel of law] centred on the chin, each ear pierced with a bonji [Sanskrit character] in silhouette, the russet-iron yodarekake [throat-defence] close- fitting and extended to fasten behind the neck
