Lot Essay

This artist should be distinguished from the Moei of lot 87, whose name is written with a different second character; both lacquerers are thought to have worked at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. See E.A. Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists (Harehope, Northumberland, 1995), pp. 182-3.
