A KOZUKA WITH AN INLAID COMPASS AND SEVEN OTHERS
Edo period (17th/19th century)
A shakudo-nanako kozuka inlaid in silver and gold with a farmer tying up a bundle of scouring rushes and inlaid with a compass; a silver kozuka inlaid with a fugu, a swordfish and a stem of bamboo, signed Hidemasa ; a shibuichi kozuka carved and inlaid with a sumo wrestler looking up at a butterfly; a pale shibuichi kozuka inlaid with sea shells and water plantain, with signature Natsuo with a kao; a kozuka with gilt back and frame, the plate decorated with the story of Shiba Onko; a brass kozuka inlaid with two rats interfering with a rice cake placed on a sanpodai [small table] as a New Year's offering to the household gods; and an iron kozuka inlaid in silver, copper and sentoku with a travelling hat on a branch of blossoming plum (8)
