A FINE GOTO KOZUKA AND SEVEN OTHERS
Edo period (18th-19th century)
A kozuka with a gilt case, with Benkei reading the subscription list, with four other members of his party, and facing them Togashi Saemon with one of the guards of the Ataka gate beside him; a pale shibuichi kozuka carved and inlaid with an insect among grasses beside a stream, signed Nakagawa Issho (a pupil of Goto Ichijo); a shakudo kozuka carved and inlaid with a snow-capped Mount Fuji with wisps of cloud, the reverse with a poem, with signature Haruaki Hogen; a shakudo nanako kozuka carved and inlaid with Futen and Raiden confronting each other on a bank of cloud, two elderly warriors doing the same on the reverse, signed Tomonaga with a kao; an iron Nara school kozuka carved and inlaid with a deer under a maple tree beside a stream; a brass kozuka with a bird on a tree, with signature Kazuyoshi tsukuru; an iron kozuka with a warrior, probably Watanabe no Tsuna being attacked by the demon of the Rashomon gate, with signature Teruyuki; and an iron kozuka inlaid in gold with a man with a pole and with five Chinese seal characters in silver nunome-zogan (8)
