1960 FMR TG 500 TIGER BUBBLE TOP
Chassis No. 21035
Black with red interior
Engine: FMR twin cylinder, 2-stroke, 490cc; Gearbox: four forward speeds and reverse; Brakes: hydraulic drums all round, cable handbrake to front wheels; Suspension: independent all round, front single wishbones and rubber torsion, rear single wishbones and coil springs.
The FMR Tg-500 was the successor to the well-established and economical Messerschmitt three wheeler. Employing the same basic layout of a self supporting shell with torsion-proof tubular steel frame and tandem seating, the Tg 500 had much improved performance over its predecessor; the narrow body and exceptionally low centre of gravity, with a 490cc, vertical twin two-stroke Sachs-derived engine at the rear, gave the new model exceptionally brisk acceleration. The Tg-500 was capable of reaching 65mph in third gear and had handling to match, with independent suspension featuring progressive springing and a self-acting stabilising control on the rear wheels. Not surprisingly, it has the unofficial name Tiger! Economical fuel consumption and a 6½ gallon tank meant that the Tg could travel a fair distance between fill-ups.
This is one of two Tigers offered from the collection; the model having the bubble-top canopy, it is one of just seven Tg-500's originally allocated to the Canadian market. The previous owner, now an elderly gentleman, is also a lifelong devotee to these cars and lovingly maintained this one for nearly twenty years. The recorded mileage showing now is just over 21,500 and all indications are that this is a true reading. An appraisal service report dated March 1996 confirms the Tiger to be in 'very good overall condition' - the machine has been completely restored during Mr. Weiner's ownership and again is a superb example of its type. It has an Ontario title document.
We believe there are only sixty three Tigers left, of all types; this is an original serial number example, with eponymous bubble top and therefore a highly desirable machine.
