Lot Essay

February 1790 Thomas Daniell wrote 'Rotas Ghur is the most considerable hill fort of this part of India; it is naturally of great strength, and the weaker parts have been assisted by very strong works.' (T. Daniell, Oriental Scenery, London, 1795-1808). Rohtasgarh, captured from its Hindu ruler by the Afghan Sher Khan Sur in 1539, was surrendered to the British in 1764.
