A four-case balck lacquer ground inro
decorated in gold, silver and red hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with foil and shell, with Hotei, one of the Shichifukujin (Seven Gods of Fortune), sealed underneath a waterfall, his wealth-sack, fan and staff on the reverse of the inro; interiors of the compartments red lacquer; risers, shoulders and rims gold lacquer -- 2¾in. (7cms) high, signed in gold hiramaki-e underneathKajikawa saku (made by Kajikawa) with a red lacquer pot-seal Ei, late 18th/19th Century; cylindrical jadeite ojime; netsuke in the form of a seated man in a loincloth and court cap, late 19th Century.

Hotei here emulates the penance undergone by Endo Morito (Mongaku Shonin, 12th Century) who sat under the Nachi waterfall after accidentally killing his beloved, Kesa Gozen.
