2° (307 x 214mm). Roman type, occasional Greek. Title printed in red and black. Title woodcut of John the Baptist signed 'B.M.', full-page woodcut border with blank shield and mermen in lower compartment on A1, repeated 4 times to open a new book or text, and 42 small woodcut scenes, one battle scene from a different set, a few text diagrams, woodcut historiated and ornamental capitals, printer's device [Vaccaro 487] at end. (Without final blank, title slightly soiled, small wormholes in first and final few quires, faint marginal dampstain at end.) 19th-century red morocco panelled in blind with gilt corner fleurons, gilt spine, top edge gilt, signed by Hammond (slight wear at extremities). Provenance: a few early annotations; Ja. Liuraria de Sancta Cruz de Coimbra (16th-century title inscription); Charles Butler of Warren Wood, Hatfield and London (note recording price of binding by Hammond in May 1873, sale Sotheby's, 9 April 1913, lot 2913, £1.12 to Wilson); Robert George Windsor-Clive, Earl of Plymouth (bookplate).
A well-illustrated edition, reprinting Tridino's 1506 edition. Numerous woodcuts come from other, earlier books. Not in Adams. Essling I.i, 11 (cf. no.9 for an enumeration of the cuts); Sander 1968.
