A Composite German Armour Of 'Maximilian' Type
Comprehensively circa 1520-40
Of bright steel, comprising close-helmet with rounded one-piece skull with broad flat slightly concave comb between two low raised ribs, neck-defence of three plates, bevor shaped to the chin and pivoted at the same points as the flattened belows visor and carrying a pivoted visor support, and engraved brass plume-holder, gorget of four plates back and front, breast-plate with plain frieze at the top and bold roped turns at the neck and movable arm-hole gussets, waist-plate and skirt of four plates, back-plate with culet of two plates, spaudlers and complete vambraces with oval side-wings on the cowters, mitten gauntlets (not a pair), and complete legharness (later) with bear-paw sabatons, decorated throughout with flutes, on the gorget with sunken slashes between, the main edges variously roped and plain: on wooden stand
