An English Hanger
Circa 1640-50
With broad curved blade (discoloured and with areas of pitting) double-edged towards the point and with single broad full-length fuller on each side, the forte incised with running wolf mark on each side, the inner side of the ricasso struck with a mark, iron hilt (patinated) with downturned shell on the outside and smaller upturned shell on the inside, each pierced and chiselled in 'mortuary' fashion with foliage and scrollwork enclosing a central medallion chiselled with a profile portrait head, scrolled rear quillon, faceted knuckle-guard (old riveted repair) interrupted at its centre, snouted pommel-cap incised with lines, and original white staghorn grip incised with wavy lines
