A Copper-Alloy Rowel Spur
Early 15th Century, probably English
With flat downcurved heel-band with low bluntly-pointed crest with everted tip, and long straight slightly tapering neck and large star-shaped rowel of six points, the main surfaces engraved throughout with a design of running foliage against a cross-hatched ground, and retaining traces of gilding

Lot Essay

The decoration can be compared to that on a contemporary gilt copper- alloy spur, said to have been found on the site of the Battle of Towton (1461), in the possession of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
