A FINE LOUIS XV ENAMELLED THREE-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Jean-Joseph Barrière (fl. 1763-1793), marked, Paris, 1771/1772, with the charge and discharge marks of Julien Alaterre and inventory number 841, later French and Dutch control marks
Oval box, the cartouches on cover, side and base panels enamelled to simulate striated agate, the cover centred with an oval reserve painted in brown camaïeu with an allegory of Music framed by gold reeding and a frosted gold band chased with laurel wreathes surmounted by two putti holding a laurel crown, the base enamelled with an allegory of Astronomy similarly framed and surmounted by two doves of Love, the sides similarly adorned with wavy reserves painted with children personifying Music, Architecture, Drawing and Astronomy, the gold borders chased with double laurel crowns on frosted gold reserves alternating with turquoise blue enamelled bands, the burnished four side pilasters chased with nude children posing as herms, the side panels chased with scrolls and laurel swags
