The complex technique required to produce this kind of decoration meant that the piece had first to be fired either in the biscuit or with a normal porcelain glaze, then the yellow enamel was applied and the piece fired again. The overglaze iron red was then added to provide the ground for the reserved floral design, which thus appears in yellow on a red ground, and the vessel was fired a third time. It is hardly surprising that pieces decorated in this way are so rare.

A somewhat larger jar, decorated with dragons, using this technique is in the Ataka Collection, Osaka, illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 14, Tokyo, 1976, no. 80.
