Lot Essay

Sergeant John Stables was born in Aberdeenshire and enlisted in the Scots Guards in October 1809, aged 19 years. Wounded at Barrosa, he went on to see further action at Salamanca and Vittoria, in addition to participating in the Waterloo Campaign, when he served in Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Rorke's Company. Stables was discharged as a result of his old wound in March 1817, his conduct being described as 'Very good'.
