VILLA SPARINA
Mario Moccagatta founded Villa Sparina with the intention of exploring the potential of the Gavi growing region as well as the Cortese grape. Working with his two sons, Stefano and Massimo, and enologist Beppe Caviola the estate is producing wines of tremendous character and opening eyes to the potential of the region. In the interest of higher quality, the estate has undertaken a programme to greatly reduce the yield per plant. Having enlisted the assistance of former Gaja agronomist Federico Curtaz, their work in the vineyard is paying dividends. This programme has proven extremely successful, the Barbera del Monferrato Rivalta is a good example of this. Dense and concentrated the wine displays the woodsy characteristics one expects from Barbera del Nonferrato, while clearly being a new style of wine. Caviola has crafted a wine of impressive extract and alcohol, which has not lost sight of where it is from.
