A Carved, Painted and Parcel Gilt Wood Manuscript Cover
Tibet, 14th Century
Deeply carved on the interior side with a recessed panel depicting the five tathagathas seated within niches separated by pillars bearing auspicious emblems, the tathagathas displayed in varying mudras with their associated mounts supporting their thrones and with Vairocana at center flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Manjushri, also with two stupas outlined in gold against a red ground, the exterior side carved with a central panel depicting an overflowing amrita vase with lotus scroll terminals encircling a parasol, a lotus, a pair of confronting fish, a conch, an endless knot, and a dharmachakra wheel surrounded by a lotus petal frieze with beaded border, the outer section carved with Tibetan letters, one side of panel painted with five stupas with banners waving, the other side carved with four tathagathas centered by a kirttimukha mask amidst foliate scrollwork
