A 16th Century gilt-brass armillary sphere,
unsigned, the meridian circle with punched numerals, engraved divisions sub-divided by 2°, the circle divided in four quadrants, the zenith axis point with turned finial, the sphere with similar punched numerals and engraved divisions, the arctic and antarctic circles riveted to the inner meridian circles, the tropics and equatorial circles inset to the inner meridian circles, the ecliptic with engraved Zodiac calendar divisions and punched numerals, the ivory earth ball at the centre with engraved tropics and equatorial circles, with gilded axis, mounted on the horizon ring, the scales with punched numerals and engraved divisions similarly divided, with engraved Zodiac and calendar scales, and the winds Ostro, Siroco, Levante, Greco, Trainontana, Maestrale, Ponente and Garbino, with four quadrant supports, raised on the shoulders of a finely modelled figure of Hercules, draped with the skin of the Nemean lion, the head resting on Hercules' back, the figure standing on a stylised rock-form base, mounted on a Breccia Novella and slate stepped plinth stand -- 7¾in. (19cm.) high
