A George III mahogany quarter-chiming musical table clock, circa 1800
The breakarch case with waisted pediment surmounted by an acorn finial and with panels of silk-backed gilt-brass sound frets to each side, brass urn finials to the angles below (one detached), each corner with brass stop fluted pilasters, with lion mask ring handles to the sides above silk backed arched brass fish scale sound frets, further frets to the the top of the rear door, the stepped and moulded base with brass and satinwood inlays, the arched dial with flower and scroll spandrels to a silvered chapter ring with inner concentric calendar ring, plain silvered centre signed GRAVELL & TOLKIEN LONDON 3266, cut steel hands and brass calendar hand, the arch with conforming subsidiary dials for Music and Strike/Silent and six tune selection (March/Allemand/Dance/Reel/Song/Rondo), with small Forte/Piano ring between, the substantial triple chain fusee movement with anchor escapement, quarter chiming on two bells and with hour strike followed by piano/forte music on fourteen bells via fourteen hammers, with 3¾in. pinned musical cylinder, with engraved border to the backplate, also with repeat signature and number -- 28in. (71cm.) high
