Lot Essay

The original of the Indian lady on the top of this penbox appears to be by 'Ali Quli Jubadar. He painted a very similar figure on a penbox now in the Khalili Collection (Khalili, Nasser D., Robinson, B.W. and Stanley, Tim: Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, part 1, London 1996, no.28, pp.61-3).
