Attributable to Kazem B. Najaf 'Ali, Persia, circa 1870
With rounded ends and sliding tray, the black top painted with a vertical composition depicting a standing lady fanning herself beneath a prunus blossom tree, a parrot in a cage beside her, various other birds in the tree and below, the black sides with minutely peopled genre scenes divided by portrait ovals, the red base with gold landscape, the red tray with gold meandering palmette vine, very slight restorations, re-lacquered

Lot Essay

The attribution to Kazem 'Ali is fairly certain. The main figure is copied directly from that painted by his father on the penbox offered in the following lot. Typical of his own work are the diminutive figures seen against a black background which are found on the sides of this penbox. See also the note to the next lot.
