A MAMLUK ENGRAVED BRASS FOOD BOWL
Syria or Egypt, first half 15th Century
With slightly rounded base and inverted conical sides rising to a step to accomodate the original lid, the sides engraved with a band of fine Mamluk thuluth inscription cartouches alternating with continuous knot cartouches and divided by palmette and floral meander roundels, narrower bands of floral meander above and below, a band of arcading around the base
12 1/8in. (31cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscriptions, in excellent calligraphy, are unusual Arabic versified benedictory wishes.
