North East Persia, 10th Century
Of shallow form with wide everted rim on short foot, the off-white interior with a dark brown fine kufic inscription around the rim and a dot in the centre, the exterior plain, areas of restoration with small inclusions from a comparable dish
17 7/8in. (45.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscription reads:
inna al-tafakkur fi'l-ma [qa] l al-hikma wa'l-qaw [l] min ba'd [al-tafakkur ajmal a] l-yumn wa a [l-sala] ma (Reflection in speaking is [a sign of] wisdom, and giving an opinion after reflection is [even] more beautiful. Good fortune and well-being).
