AN OLD BABYLONIAN HAEMATITE CYLINDER SEAL
CIRCA 1900-1700 B.C.
With a hero kneeling on a platform with upturned lion held above, another hero overcoming an inverted bull and a suppliant goddess before a deified king holding a mace, with frontally facing nude goddess between them, a solar-crescent, human head, fish, fly and goat-fish in the field, 1 1/8in. (2.8 cm.) high; another, haematite, with the frontally facing goddess Ishtar with her foot on her lion attribute, weapons at her shoulders, holding a scimitar-sword and a mace, with two confronting bull-men, a crook in the field, circa 1900-1600 B.C., 1 in. (2.4 cm.) high; an Early Dynastic lapis lazuli cylinder seal with two registers of arches, circa 1¼ in. (3.2 cm.) high; and an Assyrian Colony Period haematite cylinder seal with a seated deity being approached by two deities and a worshipper, with two lions one above the other, circa 1900-1850 B.C., 5/8 in.
