AN OLD BABYLONIAN MOTTLED BLACK AND GREY CYLINDER SEAL
CIRCA 1900-1600 B.C.
With the sun-god, Shamash, wielding his saw-toothed knife and foot resting on a mountain, a worshipper and suppliant goddess approaching, a monkey and crescent in the field, with a two line cuneiform inscription; another, black stone, a king and suppliant goddess approaching the goddess Ishtar, frontally facing with her foot on her lion attribute, weapons at her shoulders, holding a mace and scimitar-sword, a crook and crescent in the field, with rubbed two line cuneiform inscription, circa 1900-1600 B.C.; another, black stone, with a deity in front of a king holding a mace and a suppliant goddess, a monkey, scorpion, dwarf, crescent, ball-and-staff and pot in the field, with two smaller scenes, the upper register with a goddess and king, the lower with Shamash holding knife and a worshipper, circa 1900-1750 B.C.; an Old Babylonian haematite cylinder seal, with a human-headed bull in contest with a rampant lion and a hero overpowering an inverted bull, a crescent in the field and a dwarf below a two-line inscription "Shamash, Aya", circa 1850-1750 B.C.; an Ur III black stone cylinder seal, with the seated goddess, Ishtar, her lion symbol next to her throne, being approached by a goddess leading a worshipper, a solar crescent above, a one line inscription "Lugal-Dugga", circa 2100-200 B.C.; an Old Babylonian haematite cylinder seal, a seated deified king holding up a cup being approached by a worshipper and suppliant goddess, a monkey, lion-headed staff and crescent in the field, a two line inscription "Amat-Sin, wife of Warad-Sin", circa 1800 B.C.; an Akkadian grey stone cylinder seal with a long-bearded hero in contest with a water-buffalo and another hero with a rampant lion, circa 2300-2200 B.C.; and a Mesopotamian grey stone cylinder seal with a frieze of lozenges, a suspension loop above, late 4th millennium B.C.
