A 19th-Century lacquered-brass theodolite,
signed on the horizontal plate W. Harris & Co., 50 Holborn London, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, replacement dust cap, four spider's-web adjusters, extension piece, underslung bubble level, mounted on twin Y-shaped supports with fold-over clamps, having leather friction pads, the limb mounted on the vertical half-circle, one side engraved with the scale for Diff of Hypo & Base, the twin vertical supports incorporating the tangent-screw fine adjustment, mounted on the horizontal plate with level and cross-bubble, the compass box with silvered compass, edge-bar needle with jewelled pivot, twin silvered verniers, tangent-screw fine adjustment and clamp over the chamfered horizontal circle, on four-screw tripod mounting, with manufacturer's trade label, in the original mahogany carrying case -- 11¾in. (30cm.) high
