Lot Essay

This is part of a large group of drawings by Tintoretto from Reynolds' collection, all bearing an 18th Century attribution to Tintoretto. Some of these sheets are illustrated in P. Rossi, Jacopo Tintoretto, Florence, 1975, figs. 83, 96-7, 103, 105, 109, 113-6, 127, 134-6, 151, 178, 183-5, 189, 194, 201, and others were sold in these Rooms, 13 July 1936, lot 195, 23 November 1971, lot 90, 28 March 1972, lot 43 and 10 April 1985, lot 9 and at Sotheby's New York, 23 January 2001, lot 29.
The posture of the figure in the present drawing bears similarities with that of Saint Mark in The translation of Saint Mark in the Accademia, Venice.
