A LARGE EARTHENWARE VASE
meiji period (late 19th century), signed satsuma and with Shimazu mon

Of high-shouldered ovoid form with cylindrical neck and rolled lip, painted overall in colored enamels and gilt with the Forty-seven Loyal Retainers from Chushingura, each in armour and carrying a weapon and identified by labels, the shoulders patterned by a large gilt dragon and clouds and a rectangular cartouche of calligraphy which explains a portion of the story--17 5/8in. (44.8cm.) high
