A LACQUER INCENSE SET (KODOGU)

The elaborate set for the incense ceremony in matching lacquer cases decorated with roundels of peony, chrysanthemum, iris, seedling pine, plum and various other flowers interspersed on floral diaperwork, in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kimpun and gold foil on a bright nashiji ground, the interior of the lacquer cases roiro and mura-nashiji; the set consists of: a large rectangular two-tiered storage box containing the various pieces of the set; a pair of three-tiered incense boxes (kobako), the bottom cases of which are lined in silver; a pair of silver-lined incense burners (koro); a pair of long rectangular boxes; a rectangular box containing wood tallies lacquered in gold with plants on one side and numerals or a syllable on the reverse, the cover of which is constructed as a tray raised on four trefoil feet and applied with ten silver peony-inscribed stands for the five silver-rimmed mica plates; a small box pierced with a slot to receive game tallies; a box with interior divided into ten compartments; a silver utensil holder set on a splayed bracket foot and cast with a reticulated floral design, containing a silver fan-shaped spatula, silver tweezers, a pair of silver paper prickers, a pair of miniature wood chopsticks and a small silver spatula with a lacquer handle; a round silver incense box incised with chrysanthemum scroll and lined in gilt; a red lacquer game board; two brocade wrappers each containing ten paper packets, one set numbered from one to ten, the other set painted with various scenes; two paper pouches; a large square of thick paper, gold on one side and silver on the reverse, painted with landscapes
