A LACQUER INCENSE CABINET (KODANSU)
meiji period (late 19th century)
Of rectangular shape fitted with a hinged door opening to reveal three drawers, decorated on the exterior in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, okibirame and gold foil on a kinji and kimpun ground with an eight-plank bridge (yatsuhashi) spanning an iris pond, an allusion to Tales of Ise (Ise monogatari), one side of the box designed with vines of ivy, another with a pheasant beneath a snow-laden bamboo, and the remaining two sides with uguisu, or nightingales, perched on or flying over flowering cherry branches, the inside of the door decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a nashiji ground with a phoenix roundel and the faces of the drawers lacquered in gold hiramaki-e on a kinji ground with cherry blossoms floating on a stream, fitted with a shakudo handle, hinges and drawer pulls
