A CHIKUZEN SAMONJI TANTO
NAMBOKUCHO PERIOD (CIRCA 1350), SIGNED YOSHISADA
Configuration (sugata): flat (hira-zukuri) with tri-bevelled back (mitsu-mune); length (nagasa): 9 sun (27.3cm.); curvature (sori): slight, 0.3cm.; carving (horimono): kaki-nagashi futatsuji-hi on both sides.
Forging pattern (jihada): o-mokume.
Tempering pattern (hamon): very gentle gonome with insinuations of small clove-like patterns (ko-choji) in ko-nie. Point (boshi): small and rounded (ko-maru) with medium kaeri.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slightly tapering, unshortened (ubu), and with a soft, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): sujikai; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two (both double); signature (mei): Yoshisada.
Shirasaya with attestation signed Kunzan (Homma Junji).
Aikuchi-koshirae, 19th century, comprising: a saya lacquered with sparse nashiji on a black ground, mounted with black horn kurikata and koiguchi; a same tsuka set with a pair of gold menuki in the form of chestnuts, and a horn fuchi-kashira; a Goto style shakudo nanako kozuka applied with a koto and the upper half of a byobu, unsigned--length of koshirae 28.7cm.; length of tsuka 9.4cm.; length of kozuka 9.7cm.
