A SHONAI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800)

The thick, round-cornered rectangular iron plate is carved with a bold rope pattern rim. The plate is carved with a stone finish and is decorated with gold-stemmed bamboo leaves, and is inlaid with a large copper crab. The reverse has the same surface finish and is decorated with a single rice plant. Both hitsu-ana are plugged in shakudo--height 8.7cm., width 8.2cm., thickness 4.5mm.
