A TANAKA STYLE TSUBA
MEIJI ERA (CIRCA 1870), SIGNED YOSHITSUGU TSUKURU KORE

The round-cornered, rectangular iron plate has a slightly raised flat rim and edge. It is decorated in high relief with large iron rocks and two pine trees with gold needles. Small adjacent rocks are executed in nigurome and copper with gilt accents, and a flock of gold geese fly toward a silver moon. The reverse is decorated with two pine trees, one in iron and the other in nigurome, both with gold accents. The hitsu-ana are plugged in shakudo--height 8.4cm., width 7.7cm., thickness 4.0mm.

Lot Essay

Takahashi Yoshitsugu was the son of Takahashi Nagatsugu (fl. 1850, a student of Tanaka Kiyotoshi) and a student of Fujiwara Toshiyoshi (fl. 1850). He was the last notable artist of the great Tanaka school style.
