A HIZEN TADAYOSHI WAKIZASHI
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1665-70), SIGNED OMI DAIJO FUJIWARA TADAHIRO (TADAHIRO II)

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 8 sun, 6 bu (56.5cm.); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 1.7cm. increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.1cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): a particularly elegant ko-itame nashiji almost resembling crêpe silk (chirimen).
Tempering pattern (hamon): medium width (chu-suguba) in fine ko-nie and with parallel nie configurations approximating double lines of tempering (niju-ba) on both sides near the hamachi and at the lower end of the monouchi.
Point (boshi): a medium-rounded brushed tip (chu-maru hakikake).
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): wide, slightly tapering and with a thin, dry, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): very slightly off horizontal (katte-sagari); end (nakagojiri): iri-yamagata; holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (katana-mei): Omi Daijo Fujiwara Tadahiro.

Lot Essay

See Fujishiro, p. 141 for an oshigata matching the mei, yasurime and nakagojiri of this example. The signature on the oshigata dated Kanbun 4 (1664) also matches the present example, giving an approximate date of 1664. On p. 141 is another oshigata, dated Enpo 4 (1676), where the signature is markedly different, especially in the top 'wrapper' stroke and the bottom right stroke in 'Tada,' giving a date of approximately 1670 for this example, which was apparently made when Tadahiro was in his mid-50s.

Tadahiro II (1613-1693) received his working name in 1632 on the death of his father. His two tempering styles were generally either midareba or suguba, as in this example.
