A SHOWA OSAKA GASSAN TACHI
DATED THE 2600TH YEAR OF THE IMPERIAL LINE (1939), SIGNED GASSAN SADAKATSU KINSAKU AND KAO.


Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), tri-bevelled back (mitsu-mune) and medium point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 2 sun, 2 bu (68.5 cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 2.0 cm.; decrease in width of blade (fumbari): 1.0 cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): strong ayasugi with particularly strong ji-nie on the alternating layers of steel laminations.
Tempering pattern (hamon): medium suguba in nioi and extremely fine ko-nie.
Point (boshi): continuation of the hada/nie patterns.
Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): slender, slightly uplifted, ubu and with a generally clean, unpatinated surface; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (mei): kaikudashimei (date and signature on the same side) tachi-mei, Gassan Sadakatsu kinsaku (respectfully made) and kao; date (jidai): Koto ni-sen roppyaku-nen (in the 2600th year of the Imperial Line [1939]); inside (ura): Nihon Satetsu Kogyo Kabushiki Gaisha seirenko o motte.
