Catherina Pavlovna (1788-1819), daughter of Tsar Paul I and his wife Maria Feodorovna, was married successively to Grand Duke George of Oldenburg in 1809 (the year the present miniature was painted), and to King William I of Württemberg, in 1816.
The Bordeaux-born miniaturist Collas worked at the Imperial Court of Saint-Petersburg from 1803 to 1811, and painted many portraits of the nobility and the Imperial family. Another miniature of Catherina Pavlovna by him, also dated 1809, is illustrated in Karen Schaffers-Bodenhausen and Marieke Tiethoff-Spliethoff, The Portrait Miniatures in the Collections of the House of Nassau-Orange, Zwolle, 1993, nr 358. Another nearly identical version was sold in these rooms, 16 November 1993, lot 101.
