FRENCH SCHOOL, circa 1750/1760

The Duke of Penthièvre with powdered curly short wig and black silk wig-bag, wearing a dove-blue velvet coat with gold embroidery, and a white lace jabot, decorated with the blue moiré silk sash of the Royal French Order of the Saint-Esprit, the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece suspended from a red silk ribbon about his neck; a black tricorn hat bordered with white feathers under his left arm; foliage and sky background; on vellum -- 46 mm diam., engraved gilt-metal frame with plain reverse.

Lot Essay

Louis-Jean-Marie de Bourbon, Duc de Penthièvre (1725-1793), was the son of the Comte de Toulouse and of Marie de Noailles. He was Grand Admiral of France and Governor of Brittany. From his marriage to Marie-Thérèse of Este, he had two children: the Prince de Lamballe, husband of Marie-Antoinette's ill-fated friend, and the future Duchesse d'Orléans, wife of Philippe Égalité.
