Lot Essay

Baroda (now Vadodara) was the capital of one of the most princely states. The family name 'Gaekwar' (sometimes written Gaekwad) means 'Protector of Cows'. The Gaekwar was reputedly so rich that he had a carpet woven of diamonds and pearls. Parks, lakes and palaces dominate the old city and are depicted in this album. The album begins with a portrait of Syaji Rao Gaekwar. There are several images (both interior and exterior) of the Laxmi Vilas Palace, many municipal buildings including Baroda College and military offices, Nazar Bagh Palace, a view of the main street in Baroda and two photographs of spectacular jewels.

Deen Dayal is known to have photographed the guns of the Gaekwar and it seems likely this is his work.
