A HAND-WOVEN LINEN TORAH BINDER, embroidered with beige, brown, green, blue and yellow silk yarn and with silver thread, done in stem-, chain-, satin-, circular button-hole- and festoon-stitch, made of four pieces joined together with an openwork button-hole-stitch, finished all-around with a blanket-stitch, the letters worked very nicely and beautifully filled in with flowers, foliage, grapes, acorns and pomegranates, three lameds in the form of a bird, one in the form of a crowned bird's head, two human faces, a bridal couple in the peh of le-chuppah decorated with a crown above le-Torah, the abbreviations in the form of Stars of David, flowers and geometrical designs, the first three pieces more richly decorated than the fourth, inscribed in Hebrew beneath the boy's name Yosef ha-mekhuneh Yosseleh, minor staining, minor wear and a few small old repairs, mainly in the fourth piece, otherwise good condition, a very nice binder, probably Germany, 1775
