The original, on canvas, 176 x 281.5 cm, is in the Rijksmuseum since 1808. The Battle of Terheide was the decisive naval engagement of the First Anglo-Dutch war. Eventually the English navy was forced to retreat. The painting represents the battle at its height with the flagship of Marten Harpertsz. Tromp, the 'Brederode', locked in combat with the English flagship the 'Resolution' commanded by Admiral Monk. (see G.S. Keyes, Mirror of Empire, 1990, pp. 98/99)
