PELETIER DU MANS, Jacques (1517-82). L'Aritmetique, de partie an quatre Liures. Lyons: Jean de Tournes, 1554.
8° (171 x 108mm). De Tournes's device on title, calculations and charts in the text. (Without final blank s8, an occasional small, light stain.) 19th-century vellum over paper boards, gilt monogram on sides, red and black lettering-pieces on spine, g.e., by Gruel. Provenance: Eustace Trislay(?), inscription washed from title.
Third edition, following two published at Poitiers in 1549 [1550] and 1552. In his Arithmétique, Peletier was the first in France to address both the theoretical and practical mathematical aspects of commercial life for the businessman. He was also among the first to raise subjects such as commerce, profit, and interest to a higher status suitable for the cultivated elite. As a close associate of Ronsard and du Bellay, Peletier was devoted to the French language and wrote this work in the vernacular to prove that French was a perfect language for scientific writing. Cartier De Tournes 283; Not in Brunet; not in Adams; not in Baudrier.
