WATTS, Isaac (1674-1748), and DODDRIDGE, Philip (1702-1751). Divine Songs attempted in easy language, for the use of children...to which are added, supplementary poems, by Dr. Doddridge. A new edition. Revised, corrected and enlarged, with notes, moral and entertaining, and adorned with copper plates. London: printed for H. Turpin...1784.

32° (?) (99 x 63mm). The Dedication by G. Wright dated Nov. 3, 1779; the final 6 leaves "A catalogue of Entertaining Books for Children...printed for H. Turpin"; portrait frontispiece and 12 insets, including portrait of Dr. Doddridge, engraved on copper, the first dated "Mar. 9sth 1780". Dutch flowered paper over boards, with part of manufacturer's name: "Paulus Rey..." (edge of upper board not covered, as issued; back chipped). Provenance: Marg. H. Haskoll October 28, 1788. Opie TCNR 714; A & M no.119; not in Pafford.

Assuming the dates of the Dedication, and on the first plate, to be correct, an edition of this book was first published in 1780. As such it would probably have been the first illustrated edition, and this reprint still stands among the earliest such.
