TWO INDIAN MATCHLOCK GUNS

LATE 18TH CENTURY

The first with unusual 22-bore sighted barrel of square section punched with a design of minute diamonds along its upper and lower surfaces and encrusted with silver flowers at the swamped muzzle and breech, the latter with Indian arsenal mark on one side, hardwood full stock (fore-stock incomplete) with grooved panel behind the barrel, engraved match-holder, and iron sling loop (ramrod missing); the second with 20-bore sighted barrel chiselled with nine boteh each against a stippled ground within a border of foliage, the swamped muzzle and breech chiselled with flowerheads and foliage involving two birds, lacquered hardwood three-quarter stock (fore-stock incomplete) with ebony panel behind the barrel set with chiselled iron strips, butt with Indian arsenal mark on on side, iron mounts chiselled with foliage including side-plates each punched with a diaper pattern of small dots and with rear finial engraved with foliage and involving two birds, engraved trigger, iron sling loops, and original iron ramrod with partly turned and chiselled tip
